Okay, take it now. I will admit that it is there for the taking. More, I will gladly give it to you. Indeed, if my “man card” is to be surrendered after an article such as this . . . take it! I’d rather have it forfeited than have someone later claim that, while in Portland, my visit to Voodoo donut http://voodoodoughnut.com (a Portland phenom) for a top-selling Bacon Maple Bar was somehow a pre-ploy to get that man card back (knowing full-well I would be writing an article largely about beautiful gardens and affable people.)

No, I will happily admit it. If stopping to “smell the roses” and various other Portland blooms with the girl of my dreams had come without the left over waft of pastry goodness coupled with maple and bacon, I would still have gladly deemed this trip to Portland one of my favorite short escapes ever.

Maybe the women in my life are to be credited for a draw to blossoms. Could it have come from my mother who ensured several early childhood exposures to Butchart Garden’s http://www.butchartgardens.com just north of Portland and past the Canadian border? Or, possibly it arose from a talented artist of a grandmother? Perhaps from another grandmother’s style and grace as found in a daily simple, single rose afloat in a crystal bowl? Could this have even come from the hedge of roses or garden of a beloved mentor? All good precursors, yet this “exposure” trip to Portland with my wife and best friend, Brandi, will most certainly cement any sentiment toward all things flowered and leave me saying, “if you ever have only two August days in the Portland area, I would spend them this way.”

Trips to the various garden gems of the “City of Roses” (Portland’s official nickname) began with a visit to the self-proclaimed “haven of tranquil beauty” that is the Portland Japanese Garden http://japanesegarden.com/. The allure of the Japanese Garden came not only in the five intricate gardens within its confines, but in the people who we found there. As delicate as the gardens themselves, Brandi and I watched, in awe, as a 90+ year old couple strolled in front of us (there to celebrate their 70+ wedding anniversary.) We were taken by the husband’s gentle care and concern for his wife as he directed her pose for a snapshot. “Look up into the sun” he encouraged, “you always look so beautiful with your face to the sun.” Such tenderness seemed oh so apropos in this protected and carefully planned garden.

From the parking lot of the Japanese Garden, a short stroll down the hill finds you in the International Rose Test Garden. The Test Garden http://rosegardenstore.com/thegardens.cfm touts some 10,000+ rose plants ranging from the classic simple red bud now has varieties named for “budding” stars (my favorite – after the Brandy Rose of bed A27 of course! – being the Dick Clark Rose . . . like that man needs any more immortalization?) While other local attractions in “the park” could have taken the remainder of a long, enjoyable day in Portland (The Arboretum, Children’s Museum and the Portland Zoo to name a few of the other locations that sit on Portland’s 400 acre Washington Park http://www.washingtonparkpdx.org). . . a man’s got to eat!

Our day then segued to a welcomed and unforgettable brunch at Salty’s on the River http://www.saltys.com/portland/. Let me start by saying Salty’s is more of an experience than a meal. If your dining-out vocabulary only knows words like “Golden Corral” or “Cracker Barrell” or even “Red Lobster” then it is high time you joined the ranks of cuisine connoisseurs that can appreciate ambiance and flavor joined with a view like none other! I can’t say enough good about Salty’s. Again, the people at Salty’s seemed to say it all. We watched birthday parties, anniversaries, business luncheons and, yes, couples (like us) finding enough space outside to spark romance.

Overlooking the Columbia River

The buffet was like none other I have had. A standard brunch buffet of breakfast foods, a seafood buffet, roast beef, ham, crepe and omelet bars (Curtis even made me his signature “Green Eggs and Ham” spinach omelet) were only equaled by the chocolate fountain and, my personal favorite, trays of locally fresh-caught wild salmon options. The Blackened Salmon with Thai Chill was my first and last bite of the meal . . . I had to go back for another bite and did so without worry of jeopardizing the lingering goodness of the orange-cranberry cookie and the caramelized nut tart. For me, the ultimate irony is that all who know me will tell you it is no novelty for this writer to gush about a dining experience; however, it has been nigh impossible for me, with a severe allergy to all shellfish, to comment on a seafood restaurant!

Upon booking my reservation, I let Managing Partner, Linda Addy, know of my desire to experience Salty’s yet of my extreme shellfish allergy. She not only willingly accommodated my needs, she assured me that their Co-Owner shared my allergy and I could rest assured that my meal would be 100% delicious and 100% shellfish free. Chefs used new pans on my behalf. I tried sushi for the first time with full confidence that I could do so without fear of shellfish exposure. I ate in perfect bliss! Brandi too enjoyed every bite (though an admitted seafood dodger.) The cost of the meal might be more than the aforementioned chain restaurants, but the experience will long be worth the memory and our return is certain.

Day Two in the greater Portland area found us walking in a locally-owned garden paradise in Beaverton, Oregon (a welcomed respite just a few minutes from the bustle of Portland.) Innkeepers Harold and Margaret Meyering and their Cornerstone Bed and Breakfast http://www.cornerstonebedandbreakfast.com/index.htm hosted us for a night’s stay. With lofty pines and blackberry bushes abounding, and birds and squirrels playing/feeding on the deck outside our window during a homemade strawberry waffle breakfast, Harold and Margaret know how to welcome their guests! These God-fearing, loving hosts have endearing family pictures on the walls of their spacious home. Rooms are clean and bright and have their own bathrooms. Entrance is available from inside the home or from the deck door allowing patrons to come and go as they please. We felt a great connection to the Meyerings and hope to see them again on a return visit.

From Beaverton we returned to Portland with our sights set on the Rhododendron Garden http://www.portlandonline.com/parks/finder/index.cfm?PropertyID=27&action=ViewPark

in Crystal Springs. This self-guided tour through a wooded, lake area couldn’t have started our day off better. Geese, ducks and squirrels (all seeming plenty tame – approaching and following us at close range) were our only companions for the early morning stroll.

From the springs, we set off to experience the Portland Saturday Market http://www.portlandsaturdaymarket.com/. Shops and booths abound. Street vendors seem to thrive and people come out en masse to enjoy the festivities. The market is just a stone’s throw from Voodoo Donut. After an hour wait for our donuts (yes they are that good!) we strolled through the market (under the river overpass) with our tell-tale pink box of donuts and little care in the world.

As expected, my favorite part of the market was the people we encountered. While waving in and out of booths, Martin Kruming (of San Diego California), approached me in passing. “Are those donuts really that good” he asked. I had purchased a half-dozen donuts (I know, I know . . . who needs more than one dough ball with maple flavoring and 2 hunks of bacon on the top . . . but relishing in Americana and getting caught in the moment, I had 5 more on hand.) “Try one”, I prodded.

Martin reached into the box and pulled an arm off of the “Voodoo doll” donut (their classic jelly-filled chocolate bar that has been pre-cut and cooked in the shape of a doll.) His wife and daughter both cried out, “what are you doing eating that poor guy’s food?” I must confess I couldn’t have felt more solidarity or contentment had Martin Kruming been my father! He was quick to the uptake and came back to his wife and daughter with, “haven’t you met John and Jane? (pointing to me and Brandi.)” He promptly introduced us (as John and Jane) to them both. I we shook their hands and smiled. No introductions necessary. Martin’s story could have only been eclipsed by the next encounter some ten minutes later with Chris Boeck from Panama.

As I returned to feed the meter, Chris’ sister (celebrating her brother’s arrival and her son Peregrine Painter’s 13th birthday) had stopped her SUV to let Chris take a picture of Voodoo Donut. “I will give you $20 for your box of donuts”, she exclaimed. “Donuts you can have . . . the box I can’t part with (conversation piece for my office.) I approached the driver’s side door of her vehicle and revealed a second bacon maple within the box. I gave it to Chris and, if possible – and my fellow foodies you will get me when I tell you it is – I found more enjoyment from watching him enjoy what I had just enjoyed a few minutes earlier than if I had eaten that donut myself. Had I become one of the eclectic eccentrics of the Portland Saturday Market? Sure seemed that way! Moral of these 2 stories . . . You’ve simply got to go to the Portland Saturday Market and make your own new finds and new friends!

Our day and time in Portland ended as we caught the Lan Su Chinese Garden http://www.portlandchinesegarden.org/ downtown before hoping a plane back to Salt Lake. This beautiful garden might best be called stunningly “precise.” The intricacies of detail in this garden (actually a Chinese palace that was created in China and then taken apart and reassembled piece by piece here in Portland) are “awesome” in the true sense of that word. In one portion of the courtyard, every stone is aligned and patterned to be at precise height and color to form exquisite lotus flower designs.

Although smaller than other gardens visited on the trip, we found this stop certainly worthwhile as the completion of our trip and as a capstone for A Couple Exposes the City of Roses.

Love on the Beach

Every Valentine’s Day, committed couples from around the world gather on Siesta Public Beach to renew their wedding vows. While many have participated faithfully for years, for us, it was a first that came gift-wrapped in wonderful surprises, including a personalized certificate and carnation.

Once upon a time in a land far away, my husband and I said, “I do.” We were thousands of miles from home, on a beautiful beach at sunset. A handful of locals, with sighs and smiles, looked on. Recently, we said it again, this time, just minutes from home, on a beautiful beach at sunset. And 800 others, with sighs and smiles, said it, too.

The event’s only “cost” is pre-registration, consisting of a phone call or completion of a short online form. Unregistered participants are welcome but will not receive the customized certificate that couples love to collect over the years.

We planned to participate with dear friends, who met us at the Pavilion with bright red, heart-shaped helium balloons imprinted with “I love you.” The congregation grew steadily, and we all chatted, sharing “how we met” stories and other heart-warming memories. The waves lapped gently on the shore, brisk Gulf breezes made our cheeks and noses rosy and the setting sun bathed us in a warm glow. It was sheer romance. And the ceremony hadn’t even begun.

“I promise you my love, to see the beauty that is uniquely yours; to trust you and rely on you…for today is the renaissance of our union. And from this day forward I will feel no rain, for you are my shelter. You have become my world and my life. The future is ours…always.”

At 6 p.m., 400 couples recited these lines, and more, in unison – lovely sentiments written by Judge Becky Titus and her husband for use during the ceremony, which has a more than 25-year history. “I wouldn’t miss this for anything,” she said. “It’s very special to the people that come, and a very special event, personally, for my husband and me.” It’s a stark contrast from Judge Titus’ daily courtroom tasks, which she said, aren’t always pleasant. “In my job we see all of the dysfunctional marriages, the ones that fall apart,” she explained. “But this brings me back to reality. It’s wonderful to see the people that are committed to each other.”

Prizes were awarded to couples married the longest – 64 years – and the shortest – one hour!

Mode of attire was just as varied. Most were dressed casually, though the event draws people wearing everything from bathing suits to wedding gowns.

One woman wore a veil with jeans; one couple sported baseball caps embroidered with the words “Bride” and “Groom.”

Cameras clicked constantly as couples photographed each other under the archway standing for just that purpose; but photo ops elsewhere were plentiful on this picture-perfect beach.

“In as much as you gentlemen and you ladies have this day consented together in Holy Wedlock and have given and pledged your love to each other in the presence of this company, by the virtue of authority vested in me, I now pronounce you Husband and Wife.”

The sun merged with the sea, 400 couples kissed and the music began: “Let Me Call You Sweetheart” sung by the Valentine’s Quartet from the Sarasota Chorus of the Keys, four charming gents in red- and white-striped jackets.

Couples enjoyed sweets for the sweet… tasty cupcakes and refreshing punch. Some strolled to the water’s edge, others set up a barbeque; many left to join the Valentine Stroll in Siesta Key Village, where shopkeepers stayed open, live music continued and people spilled onto the streets from outdoor cafés.

As darkness descended we made yet another commitment… to attend again next year. What a loving way, what a perfect day, to say, “I do” – again.

I Cracked Up the Cat

At Gaylord Palms’ “Shrek the Halls” 2011 Christmas Event

Puss ‘n Boots and me…. we’re buds! My hubby treated me to a weekend of revelry at Gaylord Palms resort in Kissimmee, FL for my birthday in December. The resort, normally a feast for the senses any time of year, was awash in Christmas magic, blanketed in twinkling lights, colorful wreaths, ongoing seasonal music and spectacular holiday shows. This year’s theme is “Shrek the Halls” … a tribute to the loveable cast of characters from the movie, “Shrek.”

From now through January 2^nd guests and visitors can partake in some pretty cool happenings, including ICE!, the legendary annual exhibit of ice sculptures that, this year, features Shrek and friends.

The fact that the festivities are geared toward kids added to the appeal, since my husband, Patrick, and I – though 50-plus – definitely qualify.

Patrick reserved a great package deal, which included, among many other perks, tickets to ICE! as well as to the “Shrek Feast” character breakfast buffet. After having checked in on Saturday and receiving royal treatment as a birthday girl (surprise complimentary room-to-suite and dining upgrades), Sunday morning found us at Villa del Flora for a sumptuous meal while characters milled about, including the giant ogre himself.

We hugged and took photos with Shrek and his beautiful pre-dusk Fiona, a vision in Cameron Diaz chic. But the cat’s meow was meeting Puss ‘n Boots, the movie character voice-acted by Antonio Banderas. Keep in mind that these larger-than-life cuddly creatures are not permitted to make a sound, much less speak during public appearances.

So, we’re dining on smoked salmon with capers and onions, spinach quiche, fresh fruit, assorted omelets and an array of cheeses and meats – forgoing the waffles, pancakes and pastries – while sipping bloody Mary’s and Mimosas along with freshly brewed coffee. Lo and behold, Puss ‘n Boots appears at our table.

I don’t know if it’s because I’ve been on a “cat” kick lately (that’s another story) or if I got swept up in the sheer magic of the moment, but not only did I hug the huge cat-masked Banderas look-alike, but I scratched his fuzzy tummy to see if he would purr. His big body went wild, right leg shaking in a frenzied motion that cracked up the crowd. Then we snuggled cheek-to-cheek for my photo op, when I whispered to him that his whiskers were indeed tickling my face.

That did it. He tried to stifle his unauthorized audible laughter… snorting, snickering… obviously moved by the unexpected sentiment from this perennial child… and remained available for my amusement throughout our meal. Hey Puss, not trying to “rat” you out, but rather expressing appreciation for one of the highlights of our visit!

Among others, of course, was ICE! – a colorful 20,000 square-foot display of Shrek characters and Christmas-themed figures sculpted from two million pounds of ice. Don’t miss the 30-foot ice slide… despite all the health warnings, it’s tame enough for me… and all the other kids. Pack gloves and be prepared to wear a resort-issued quilted parka as the exhibition area is maintained at a frosty nine degrees. A refreshing break from tropical temps and a great reminder of why we choose to chill out in Florida, any time of year.

Simply Historic

Charleston’s famous Historic District is replete with stately mansions, historic churches, intriguing museums, antique shops, world-renowned restaurants and unbridled grace, history and tradition. Take a horse-drawn carriage ride along cobblestone streets or go on a guided walking tour at dark through Charleston’s most haunted sites. Embark on Charleston’s finest home tours for a taste of what it was like to live in the low country during the Civil War. Referred to as the Holy City, it provided a haven to those who fled religious persecution. Church spires line the cityscape, and represent a myriad of faiths.

Surf’s Up!

Known as “The Edge of America,” Folly Beach is a seven-mile-long barrier reef located just eight miles south of Charleston — the closest beach to the city. Calm and relaxed, Folly Beach is arguably the best beach in South Carolina and one of the most in-demand surfing spots on the East Coast. It’s is a great place to splash in the waves, collect seashells and see the Morris Island Lighthouse. A fishing pier and sun swept views make it one of the last authentically rustic beaches in the area. If you’re a history buff, Folly abounds with Civil War historic and cultural sites. Sullivan’s Island and Isle of Palms are more upscale and boast warm waters and gentle surf… ideal for a relaxing swim.

Southern Comfort

Charleston is known for seriously great Southern dining, with festive dockside oyster roasts, high-end restaurants, outdoor cafés and fresh-from-the-dock seafood. Old-fashioned favorites such as low country boil, she-crab soup and pralines share center stage with New Southern Cuisine; young local chefs are earning raves for imaginative dishes like deep-fried pig ear appetizers and grits with foie gras. Just north of the historic downtown near the College of Charleston, the Upper King area is a bastion of urban cafés and edgy boutiques. At the tip of a peninsula, the city’s historic downtown only covers a small geographic area, but it’s so densely packed with museums, restaurants…See More and bars, you could easily spend a week or more here.

Seeing Stars

Charleston’s too-quaint-to-be-true cobblestone lanes and antebellum mansions almost seem made for the movies. So it’s no surprise that several famous films have been set here; The Notebook, The Legend of Bagger Vance and The Patriot, among many others. The opera Porgy and Bess, about poor African-Americans struggling to exist in 1920’s Charleston, gave the world the song “Summertime”, among many others. Modern-day musicians include pop-folk singers and country rockers. Step out on the town to also discover a variety of jazz bands and classic quartets who play live on any given night in the city’s many fashionable bars, lounges and hotel lobbies.

If you like theater, you’ll love Charleston. In 2010 it was listed as one of the country’s top 10 cities for theater, and one of the top 2 in the South. The most famous of them all is The Dock Street Theatre, America’s first. Home of the Charleston Stage Company, it’s South Carolina’s largest professional theater company, presenting a full season of plays, musicals and theatre-for-youth productions.

Penguin on a Plane

Flying Penguin? Every now and then you stumble upon something silly in cyberspace that just makes you smile. That was the case with this post on Southwest Airlines’ blog which is populated by posts from employees, customers and just plain fans of the Texas-based company.

Penguin on a Plane: The Story Behind Pete

“Ladies and gentlemen, it’s your lucky day.”

Those seven words, kindly provided by the flight attendant, can either make or break a flight. Are we about to experience copious amounts of turbulence? Is someone famous on board? Is the lavatory door jammed? Will we be receiving an unlimited supply of delicious honey roasted peanuts?

Then came the follow-up, “We have Pete the penguin from SeaWorld on board this Southwest flight, and we would like to take him out so he can stretch his legs and walk down the aisle.”

The following 15 minutes of Southwest Airlines Flight 583 from San Francisco to San Diego confirmed my love for Southwest Airlines, SeaWorld and random acts of animals walking on airplanes. As Pete waddled toward the rear of the aircraft, passing giddy children and business people alike, a SeaWorld representative provided facts and information regarding penguins over the flight PA system. Pete confidently strutted his way down the aisle while periodically poking his head under seats.

“That’s not something you see everyday!” understated the passenger next to me.

“Ha ha, I thought penguins couldn’t fly?!” I heard from the back of the aircraft.

As Pete made his first pass, I decided to begin recording him by placing my laptop on the ground, where I could record a “bird’s eye view,” with the hopes of later sharing this experience with my friends and family. After the curious penguin made his two trips up and down the aisle, he was placed back into his carrier, leaving passengers in a state of “shock and awwwwe.” Pete’s tuxedo tour left a lingering buzz the remainder of the flight–it truly was our lucky day.

Here’s the scenario: You’ve just checked in to your hotel at a luxurious European resort, and you’re looking forward to a fun and exciting vacation. You dump your bags on the bed and pull out your cell, eager to call up that great local restaurant your cab driver recommended…

Hold the phone! Calling from your personal mobile phone while abroad can be very expensive, and sometimes it won’t work at all. We’ve gathered a few tips to help you stay in touch while you’re overseas without breaking the bank — keep these in mind to save your wallet and your sanity.

Do the Research: First, you’ll need to find out if your personal cell phone works abroad. Some networks’ phones are more compatible with foreign networks than others. If it will work abroad, make sure to ask your provider about roaming charges and data fees, as these can be very high when overseas. Turn off any automatic downloads or services on your phone that may incur fees, and find out if features besides calling — like text or data — work normally, and ask about your options.
Buy A SIM Card: If you have an unlocked cell phone which can work with other carriers’ networks, you can buy a local SIM card. This removable chip determines a phone’s network and number. You buy minutes for the SIM card and temporarily replace the original card in your phone with the new one (your SIM card is probably hiding behind the phone’s battery.) Be careful not to lose the original — they are very small. Prepaid SIM cards offer a cheap and easy solution to calling in the country you’re staying in.
Get A Local Phone: If need be, you can buy a new phone to use abroad. Prepaid disposable phones or inexpensive local phones with prepaid SIM cards offer one type of solution. If you’re going to stay for an extended period, you may have to cave and buy a local phone and calling plan. If you’re staying for several months or more, it may be worthwhile. Remember, in some countries texting is cheaper than calling, so find out before you purchase a plan.
Skype and Internet Calling: Skype and other internet calling services allow you to make calls wherever you have an internet connection. The call quality can vary, but this method is still by far the cheapest. Both pay-as-you-go and monthly plans are available.
Calling Cards: The classic solution! This may seem like an old-fashioned way to make your calls, but it’s still cheap and convenient. Locally-purchased cards typically offer the best call quality and value.
Use a Device: Devices like Magic Jack offer another option. This type of device plugs into your computer’s USB port and allows you to make calls over the computer’s Internet connection. Once you’ve paid the monthly fee, your local calls are typically unlimited — for international calls, you’ll likely need to purchase prepaid international minutes.

Keeping these tips in mind should help keep your international calling cheap and painless. Spend less time worrying about your bill, and more time relaxing and enjoying your vacation!
